Unit 1 · Project 3
Digital Vector Quilt Pattern
Create a repeating quilt-inspired pattern using vector shapes and your personal color palette.
Quilt patterns are one of the oldest forms of visual design — and they're built entirely from geometric shapes arranged in a repeating grid. You'll design a digital quilt block using vector tools, then tile it into a full pattern. Your pattern must use at least 3 shapes, at least 3 colors from your personal palette, and demonstrate clear visual rhythm through repetition. The final piece should feel cohesive — like all the pieces belong together. This project bridges traditional craft with digital design tools.
Objectives
- 1Design a single quilt block using at least 3 geometric shapes
- 2Apply your personal color palette (3–4 colors)
- 3Tile the block into a minimum 4×4 repeating pattern
- 4Export as a high-resolution PNG suitable for printing
Materials
- Adobe Illustrator or Canva
- Color palette from your mood board
- Graph paper for planning the grid
Tips
- Start with a simple block — complexity comes from repetition, not from the block itself
- Try rotating and flipping your block before tiling — it creates new patterns
- Use your mood board color palette to keep everything connected
- Print a small test version before finalizing — colors look different on paper
