Unit 1 · Project 2
Identity Icon
Design a personal icon or symbol that represents you using basic shapes and vector tools.
An identity icon is a single graphic mark — like a logo — that represents you without using your name. Think of it as a visual signature. Using Adobe Illustrator or a vector tool, you'll design an icon built entirely from basic geometric shapes: circles, rectangles, triangles, and lines. No clip art, no photos — just shapes you construct and arrange. The icon should be simple enough to recognize at small sizes but meaningful enough to feel personal. Consider: an object you love, an activity that defines you, an abstract symbol with personal meaning.
Objectives
- 1Design an icon using only basic geometric shapes (no clip art or photos)
- 2Create the icon in a vector program so it can scale without losing quality
- 3The icon must be recognizable at both large and small sizes
- 4Submit both a color version and a black-and-white version
Materials
- Adobe Illustrator or Canva (vector mode)
- Pencil and paper for sketching 5+ thumbnail ideas first
- Visual journal
Tips
- Sketch at least 5 different ideas before going digital — your first idea is rarely your best
- Simple is harder than complex — resist the urge to add more
- Test your icon at thumbnail size (1 inch) — if it's still readable, it works
- Look at real logos for inspiration: Nike, Apple, Target — all simple shapes
