Unit 3 · Project 1
3 Polymer Canes
Polymer clay caning (also called millefiori) is a technique where you build a patterned log of clay that reveals a design when sliced — like a patterned candy cane or a roll of sushi. You'll create three distinct canes: one geometric (stripes, checkerboard, or bulls-eye), one floral or organic, and one of your own design. Each cane should produce at least 8 clean slices. The slices will be used to decorate your masterpiece sugar skull.
Objectives
- 1Create 3 distinct cane designs (geometric, organic, and original)
- 2Each cane must produce at least 8 clean, even slices
- 3Slices must show the interior pattern clearly
- 4Condition clay thoroughly before building — no cracks
Materials
- Polymer clay in multiple colors (provided)
- Clay roller or smooth cylinder
- Craft knife or clay blade
- Cutting mat
- Oven for baking (teacher-supervised)
Tips & Techniques
1Condition your clay by kneading it until it's warm and pliable — cold clay cracks
2Roll all clay logs to the same diameter before stacking
3Chill your cane in the freezer for 10 minutes before slicing — it cuts much cleaner
4Reduce your cane slowly by rolling from the center outward, not just squeezing the ends
