High Contrast Portraits (Imaging → Printmaking)
Capture. Contrast. Carve. Print. Create high-contrast portraits and transform them into powerful prints.
Vocabulary
High Contrast
An image with strong, clear darks and lights and minimal mid-tones. High contrast images translate well to printmaking because they simplify complex tonal information into printable shapes.
Social Theme
A concept or issue that relates to society, community, or human experience. Art with a social theme communicates something beyond personal expression.
Portrait Concept
The idea or meaning behind a portrait — beyond just capturing a likeness. A conceptual portrait uses visual choices (lighting, pose, expression, setting) to communicate something specific.
Artist Statement
A written explanation of an artwork's intent, process, and meaning. An artist statement gives the viewer context for understanding the work.
Threshold
A Photoshop adjustment that converts an image to pure black and white by setting a cutoff point — pixels above the threshold become white, pixels below become black.
Reduction Print
A printmaking technique where you print, carve more, print again — progressively reducing the block. Each color layer is printed before more is carved away.
Social Commentary
Art that makes a statement about society, politics, or human behavior. Strong social commentary is specific, not vague — it says something particular, not just 'things are complicated.'
