Texture Grid — From Photo to Print (Bridge Unit)
See it. Capture it. Translate it. Photograph textures and prepare for printmaking.
Vocabulary
Texture
The surface quality of an object — rough, smooth, bumpy, soft. In photography, texture is captured through light that rakes across a surface at an angle, creating shadows that reveal the surface detail.
Macro Photography
Extreme close-up photography that reveals details invisible to the naked eye. Macro shots of everyday surfaces reveal unexpected texture and pattern.
Grid Composition
Arranging multiple images in a structured grid format. A grid creates visual rhythm and allows comparison between images.
Positive/Negative Space
Positive space is the subject itself; negative space is the empty area around it. In printmaking, understanding which areas will print (positive) and which won't (negative) is essential.
Relief Print
A printmaking technique where the raised surface of a carved block is inked and pressed onto paper. The carved-away areas don't print.
Value
The lightness or darkness of a color or tone. In black-and-white photography and printmaking, value is the primary tool for creating depth and contrast.
Contrast
The difference between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. High contrast images have strong blacks and whites with few mid-tones.
